Fashion Show

Our intern, Kristin has a good friend named Taura. Taura grew up in the rural north in a poor town. She has always worked as a volunteer since she moved to Windhoek and she's a fashion designer and she makes jewelry as well. Taura was putting together a fashion show to display her designs and those of other local designers. The show was to benefit an orphanage in her hometown that she and her mom developed together. It was also to promote going green- one of the outfits was completely made out of recycled items. So Taura asked all of us to be in her fashion show- she needed a few models, people to take pictures, etc. and I volunteered to model.

The big show was on Saturday night so we got there in the afternoon to rehearse and get our hair/makeup done and figure out exactly how to wear our outfits. Rehearsal was hilarious- my model partner was Matt, who is so awesome. We practiced our poses and made last minute changes to our outfits and then it started. A ton of people showed up- all of the chairs were filled and there were a few people standing up- there were also a couple photographers. The show made it into the paper with photos and everything.

There were a few music groups before the fashion show and then we were on- my first outfit was a really great white top with one of Taura's amazing bead necklaces. My second was the recycled outfit- a skirt made out of black and white trash bags and packaging tape. My top was a piece of canvas with tape on top for decoration and the ties of grocery bags tying it together at the back. I loved this outfit and I got to keep it. I would definitely wear the top out again. Some people had really great paper with different photos for shirts- they used packaging tape to stick it on to themselves. My last outfit was a traditional African skirt and shirt with a head covering. I didn't look quite right in it but I had a lot of fun in that outfit.

One of the directors of the program, Linda, came to the show. She gave a few of us a ride back home and stopped at the classiest KFC on the planet- no kidding, it's 2 stories and spotless and modern. Strange. We were all starving at it was the only thing open... my belly is not used to that though. And 3 people had to ride in the back of her truck and chose to stand and hold on to the bar in the back-- this is Africa.
